M and I started March off with a trip to Cardiff Bay last night to see Limehouse Lizzy at The Point last night. Limehouse Lizzy are one of the better Thin Lizzy tribute bands currently touring. I finally managed to make it to The Point for a gig (which is somewhat surprising considering the amount of gigs I go to!), and I'm quite impressed with the venue. The night got off to a good start - once we got there, I won't go into Cardiff Bus or the lack of it! - whilst we were at the bar, I noticed the background music was a Jeff Scott Soto track from his Yngwie Malmsteen days. The geek in me looked up the track and its from 'Rising Force' album ( I think the track is 'Now Your Ships Are Burned'). Woohoo!
Back to Lizzy. They came onstage at about 9.30pm (no support) and did a 2 hour set, minus a break of about 20 mins. Opening track was (of course) Jailbreak, followed by Dancing in the Moonlight. All the grat songs were in the set, including Don't Believe A Word, Emerald, Rosalie, Parisienne Walkways, Chinatown, Killer On The Loose, Out In The Fields plus a few others that I (eek!) hadn't heard - Warrior, Johnny The Fox and Suicide. In the encore - The Rocker, a cover of T-Rex's 'Get It On' (apparently at the request of the roadie, Julian) and Whisky In The Jar.
I must say- the lead singer (Wayne, according to their website Limehouse Lizzy) is really good looking, from where I was standing anyway! Excellent musicianship, there were of course a few different embellishments on the songs but a very good substitute for the real thing. Bad points - not very many, apart from not being on stage long enough! As there was no support band, the audience were left waiting at least 90 minutes - why not do a 2.5 hour set or longer?
If you are interested in the real Thin Lizzy, they are playing a few select UK dates next week - see Ticketmaster for details. Try and go - I saw them in Nov 2003 (Leadmill, Sheffield) and they were fantastic!!!!! Unfortunately, Thin Lizzy themselves do not tour often, but these guys go some way to making up for this! All their tour dates are on the website. I'm certainly looking for their next Cardiff date!
